The Situation
The lab, which operations began in September 2008, houses a Microsoft platform which software developers can use to test their open source applications. “We are providing the lab with a satellite-based broadband network, so developers can have faster access to huge amounts of data and information – thus helping them work more efficiently”, said Jose Maddatu, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of WIT.

Albert de la Cruz, Platform Strategy Manager for Microsoft Philippines, expected that the satellite broadband connection could boost the usage of the lab. “Through the satellite connection, the interoperability lab can now communicate with Microsoft labs in other countries”, he added.
The Microsoft lab has also been used for the e-Government projects of CICT, the Philippines’ primary government sector for the promotion of ICT in the country. As a big user of open source software, CICT welcomes the lab development and encourages local developers to come up with more application. “We are very happy that Microsoft has open source initiatives that make ICT more accessible to the market. Having broadband connectivity enables developers to connect with other communities”, said Ray Anthony Roxas-Chua, Chairman of CICT.
